National Patient Safety Alert 2026

A new National Patient Safety Alert has been issued highlighting the risk of death and serious harm from falls involving patient hoists and slings. The alert applies across hospitals, community healthcare, care homes, nursing homes and services supporting people in their own homes, and calls for organisations to review their pre-use checks, equipment compatibility, maintenance and LOLER examinations, equipment records, and staff training.

With the alert requiring action by 16 September 2027, now is a good time for organisations to review their current moving and handling arrangements, make sure equipment is safe and appropriately maintained, and ensure staff have the right knowledge and competency to use hoists and slings safely.
