Choosing the Right Pool Hoist for Your SEND School

Here at Medaco, we work closely with special schools to assess, advise, and install hoisting solutions tailored to students’ needs within hydrotherapy and pool environments. As experts in project installations, we are frequently asked about the key considerations for pool hoist installations and which options are best suited for school environments.

In this blog, we will explore the factors your school should consider when installing or replacing a pool hoist, the different options available, and the cost implications of each.

Key Considerations for Pool Hoist Installation.

When upgrading, replacing, or installing a pool hoist, it is crucial to assess the transfer needs of your students.

Ask yourself:

– Where will the hoist be used to transfer students to and from?
– Will students be transferred from a chair into the pool or from a sling and lowered in?
– Have your hoisting needs changed over time?
– Will they continue to evolve in the future?
– Are you looking to replace your current hoist with a similar model, or do you need an upgrade?
– What is your school’s budget for the project?
– What are the safe working load requirements?

There are three main types of pool hoists commonly used in special schools:

1. Fixed Poolside Hoists

Installed directly at the poolside, these hoists offer a limited but secure hoisting range. They are predominantly made of stainless steel with a lifespan of 5 to 10 years. Fixed hoists can support both chair and sling transfers, and they can often be removed from their floor socket and stored away when not in use. If your school has multiple pools, additional sockets can be installed for greater flexibility.

2. Ceiling Track Hoists

Mounted to the walls or ceiling above the pool, ceiling track hoists provide a greater range of movement and do not take up any poolside floor space. Made from powder-coated aluminum to prevent rust, they are durable and designed to withstand pool environments. These hoists primarily support sling transfers and typically have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years for the track and 5 to 10 years for the hoist itself.

3. Portable Pool Hoists

Gaining popularity due to their flexibility, mobile pool hoists do not require installation and can be moved to the poolside as needed. However, they do take up considerable floor space, so storage must be factored in. This option is one of the few that allows for independent use by students. If stored properly away from the poolside, mobile hoists can have a longer lifespan compared to fixed options.

Budgeting and Cost Considerations

When budgeting for a pool hoist, two main factors should be considered: the cost of the equipment itself and the cost of labor for installation. Below are the approximate costs for each option, including installation and setup:

Fixed Poolside Hoist: £8,000 – £12,000 (depending on specifications and accessories)

Ceiling Track Hoist: £3,000 – £7,000 (depending on coverage and track layout)

Portable Pool Hoist: £6,000 – £9,000

From a financial standpoint, ceiling track hoists provide the best value, offering greater pool coverage at nearly half the price of the other options.

Installation Duration

The installation timeline varies depending on the hoist type:

Portable Pool Hoist – Quickest option, requiring only delivery and setup.

Fixed Poolside Hoist – Typically installed within a day.

Ceiling Track Hoist – Can take between 1 to 5 days, depending on track layout complexity.

Additional Considerations for Installation

During installation, several factors may need to be addressed:

Pool Draining: Some installations require draining the pool for safety.

Scaffolding or Access Equipment: Ensure the cost for these is accounted for in your budget.

Pool Environment Conditions: High temperatures and humidity may require adjustments such as lowering water temperature or allowing installers to work in shorter shifts.
