Is a shower trolley the same as a shower bed or shower table?

Yes. “Shower bed”, “shower table” and “shower bathing trolley” are alternative names used across the industry for the same type of equipment: a wheeled, height-adjustable platform for showering a service user lying flat.

What is the difference between a shower trolley and a shower chair?

A shower trolley supports a service user lying down and suits those with little or no ability to sit unaided. A shower chair or commode is designed for users who can sit upright with some support. The right choice depends on the user’s mobility.

Are shower trolleys height adjustable?

Yes. Most shower trolleys are height adjustable, either hydraulically or electrically, allowing carers to raise or lower the platform to a safe, comfortable working height and reducing the risk of back strain.

What is the weight capacity of a shower trolley?

Capacities vary by model, typically from around 150 kg up to 225 kg or more for bariatric shower trolleys. Always choose a trolley rated comfortably above the user’s weight.

Can a shower trolley be used with a mobile hoist?

Yes. Where a service user cannot be side-transferred by hand, a mobile hoist and compatible sling can be used to lift them safely onto the shower trolley. Many trolleys have generous clearance underneath to improve accessibility for mobile hoists.

Do shower trolleys need to be serviced?

Yes. While shower trolleys fall under PUWER rather than LOLER, they should still be serviced and safety-checked regularly to keep them safe and compliant. Medaco’s servicing and maintenance agreements cover this for you.

Are shower trolleys suitable for children?

Yes. Paediatric shower trolleys are sized specifically for children and smaller adults, offering the same safety features as adult models on a more compact platform.

Do I need a LOLER inspection for my new patient handling equipment?

Yes. If your product is classified as lifting equipment under the UK’s Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and is used for lifting people, it must receive a thorough examination by a competent person before being put into service (unless a valid Declaration of Conformity and evidence of compliance removes the need for an initial examination), and then at the required intervals thereafter. Employers and equipment owners are responsible for ensuring compliance with LOLER.
